Nazarbayev University’s Center for Preparatory Studies gains UK accreditation

Nazarbayev University is the first university in Kazakhstan to have its English curriculum accredited by the British Association of Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes (BALEAP).

The Center for Preparatory Studies foundation program (NUFYP) gained accreditation for its English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course following a lengthy and intensive period of evaluation and observation by BALEAP examiners. It is one of only two universities outside of the United Kingdom to have been awarded this prestigious distinction. Nazarbayev University joins a select list of 29 universities that includes 10 of the top 100 universities in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

BALEAP is a global forum for English teaching professionals. Its aim is to enhance the quality of teaching of the specialized English required in Universities—English for Academic Purposes (EAP)—by providing an accreditation process. To acquire BALEAP accreditation NUFYP courses, faculty, facilities, and teaching had to meet exact standards so students are given the best learning experience.

As well as providing professional support and ensuring a high standard of teaching, BALEAP accreditation has other direct benefits to NUFYP students. An example is that Dundee University will accept students who have successfully completed NUFYP directly into their degree programs without requiring additional English study.

NUFYP currently has just over 600 students preparing for undergraduate study. In addition to preparing students for the rigors of undergraduate degrees conducted in English, NUFYP students expand their Mathematics knowledge and develop skills in Leadership.

The Center for Preparatory Studies continues to plan for the future. Having gained international standing and recognition in teaching Academic English it is poised to become the foundation program of choice for students across the region.
