Interview with members of Student Council 2022-2023

Please tell us about yourself?

My name is Anastasiya Tyazholova and I was the President of the Student Council in the 2022-2023 academic years. I was born in Pavlodar and graduated from a regular secondary school. In addition to the Student Council, I was also a member of the "NU Runners". During the Foundation Program, I participated in the "IHelper" Red Crescent project, where I taught English and math to children with special needs, and in the second semester I was a member of the beautiful "NU Theater". Now I am engaged in human rights activities to monitor court hearings from "Qadir-Qasiet" and "UNICEF".

Did you enjoy studying at the Foundation Program?

I enjoyed studying at the Foundation Program, besides the fact that I acquired a lot of useful knowledge. I also found purpose in life and the activity that I really want to do.

What skills have you developed while studying at CPS?

In terms of academic skills, I learnt how to write research projects, academic papers, and how to choose reliable sources of information. However, my work in the Student Council has taught me leadership skills, how to work in a team, how to organize events, and how to take a project from idea to implementation.

What are your plans for the future?

I enrolled the Biosciences Program at Nazarbayev University and plan to develop myself in this area. I am most interested in the areas of molecular biology, genetics, and cancer biology.

What is your advice to future NUFYP students?

Try new things, meet interesting people, join student clubs, but please don't forget that studying is your top priority. Take care of your mental health, do not take on too much, otherwise “emotional burn-out” is waiting for you.

Please tell us about yourself?

Rakhymzhan Baitureyev, 18 years old. I am a member of the Student Council, I was born and raised in Astana. I am fond of mathematics and theater.

Did you enjoy studying at the Foundation Program?

Yes. The experience is completely new. There are no boring classes like at school. Here you decide more and do what you yourself consider useful to you. Welcome to the university!

What skills have you developed while studying at CPS?

Firstly, communicating with people. At school, there is no need and you don’t really have a chance to think on your own. But here you will start to establish contact with people - with those you are interested in, and you will also learn to get along with others. And secondly, in addition to knowledge itself, it is English. Even if you have an '8' in IELTS, you will still start speaking, writing and communicating at a much higher level after the Foundation program.

What are your plans for the future?

I would like to study mathematics. I consider studying in Europe or Korea, but Nazarbayev University is also very good, especially the undergraduate programs. As for work, I want to be an actor, because in this field it is quite possible to turn a hobby into a source of income.

What is your advice to future NUFYP students?

Be bold and open to new things. The Foundation program is the golden mean, where you have more opportunities and freedom at the same time to do something new for yourself or hone the old skills. Discovery of student life happens right here - do not miss the moment!
