Mark Houghtaling hails from Ohio, USA. After graduating from the University of Chicago, Mark worked in secondary education in the late 1990’s in Botswana and Mississippi, USA. Concurrently, he earned a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi in curriculum and instruction. In the early 2000’s, after getting married in South Korea, he shifted to teaching English as a foreign language at the college level in western China. In 2009 he returned to his home state to teach intensive English to international students entering the University of Cincinnati. Following completion of a second MA in intercultural studies, he resumed teaching in western China, with expanded responsibilities including writing courses for graduate and undergraduate students. In 2019 he moved west to Kazakhstan to take up his current post as a teaching fellow in English for academic purposes at Nazarbayev University. In his leisure time Mark is an avid reader and hiker.
